Dimpleplasty

Dimples over the cheeks can give a touch of cuteness to the face and are generally aesthetically pleasing.

The surgical procedure to create dimples is very easy and straightforward when done properly.

Houston, TX, plastic surgeon Dr. Madjidi can perform dimple creation surgery in her office under local anesthesia.

About Dimples

Dimples can occur naturally on one side or both cheeks in various numbers, locations, shapes, and depths. Dimples are natural adhesions between the skin and the deep muscles. When we smile and contract the muscles, the skin is pulled in. Most cheek dimples are not present at rest. Dimples can be created accidentally by a penetrating trauma through the cheek, but they can also be created surgically.

Dimples Can Really Make You Stand Out

According to BBC Science Focus, only 20 to 30% of the world's population has dimples. A dimpleplasty at our Houston practice can give you a smile that really makes an impression!

The Step-by-Step Process of Dimple Creation

During a consultation for dimple creation surgery, Dr. Madjidi will review the details of a dimpleplasty with you and determine if you are a candidate. If you both agree to move forward with the procedure, she will provide all the information you need for the day of your surgery. In general, you can expect these steps:

A dimpleplasty is a quick procedure that can be done in under an hour with minimal downtime.
A dimpleplasty is a quick procedure that can be done in under an hour with minimal downtime.

Preparation

First, the desired location of the dimple is marked over the skin. Some patients choose to have it on one side only, while some prefer dimples on both sides.

Anesthesia

The inside of the cheek is numbed with a local anesthetic.

Incisions and Sutures

A small incision is then made in the inside of your cheek. There is no incision or scar on the outside skin. A small absorbable suture is passed through the inside of the cheek and catches the undersurface of the skin where the dimple is desired. The average time for the suture to dissolve is 8 to 12 weeks, based on each individual. When this suture is tied, it causes a dimpling in the overlying skin. You can see the dimpling right away.

Creating the Dimple

At first, there is a dimple present at rest even without smiling, but after several weeks, or sometimes a few months, as the suture dissolves and gets replaced by the scar, the dimple is only present while smiling or animating the face. It will change and seem shallower.

Healing

The gradual scarring between the inner skin and muscle will cause a permanent dimple even after the suture is absorbed. However, the depth, shape, and longevity of the dimple vary depending on the amount of fat in the cheeks, the muscle anatomy, and eating or chewing habits. The sutures used are absorbable and fall in a few days.

Recovery

There are minimal complications with dimple formation aside from a little bit of swelling and bruising for a few days. You should be able to resume your normal activities the following day. Dr. Madjidi will give you a prescription for antibiotics for a few days after your dimple creation surgery in order to prevent infection.

The pain is generally manageable with just Tylenol. Immediately after dimple creation surgery, you will need to wait until the numbing wears off before you eat because you may bite your cheek without noticing it. You will need to avoid hot and spicy food for about a week.

A Closer Look At Candidacy

Dimpleplasty is a relatively straightforward procedure that can be performed for virtually anyone in good overall health. However, the presence of certain issues may disqualify certain patients. These include oral infections, blood clotting disorders, and diabetes.

Furthermore, you should know that if you are a smoker, you must be able to quit smoking for approximately one month before and after your procedure. Dr. Madjidi will evaluate your candidacy personally to make sure it is safe to move forward with your personalized dimple creation. If you smoke, why not take this opportunity to break the habit as you begin a new chapter of life with a beautifully enhanced visage and smile?

Frequently Asked Dimpleplasty Questions Answered by Our Facial Surgery Expert

When Will I Notice My New Dimple?

Patients can see the dimpling that occurs from this plastic surgery right away. The dimple will be present at first, even when the face is resting. After several days or weeks, the dimple will be present only while smiling or moving the face, just as a natural dimple would appear.

Can Anyone Have a Dimpleplasty?

Patients must be in good health to undergo the surgical process, but in terms of cheek type and size, virtually any adult is a dimple creation candidate.

Is a Dimpleplasty Reversible?

The great benefit of dimple creation surgery is that it can be reversible. A small reversal procedure can remove the dimples by releasing the skin.

Can You Create a Chin Dimple?

Yes. A dimpleplasty is most commonly performed on cheeks, but it can also be performed to create a chin dimple.
