How is a Dimple Created?

Dimples

Dimples are natural adhesions that occur between the skin and deep muscles. When we smile and contract the muscles, the skin is pulled in, creating a dimple. Most cheek dimples are not present at rest. Dimples can be created accidentally by trauma to the cheek but can also be created surgically. The cosmetic process for dimple creation is called a dimpleplasty.

Dimple Transformation From a Houston Patient

Dr. Madjidi has worked with a diverse set of patients that want a dimpleplasty to accentuate their looks. Here's a Houston patient who received two dimples of varying depths to create a natural and stunning result.

The depth of the dimple will depend on the thickness of the patient's cheek. One side may be naturally thicker than the other, creating a slightly asymmetrical appearance that highlights the natural-looking results of a dimpleplasty.

Consultation

During consultation for dimple creation surgery, Dr. Madjidi will review the details of a dimpleplasty with you and provide all the information you need for the day of your surgery.

Anesthesia

A dimpleplasty is performed in-office, using a local anesthetic to make the procedure virtually painless. With local anesthesia, you will remain conscious and able to communicate with the doctor throughout your dimple creation surgery and can drive yourself home afterward.

Some patients decide to undergo a dimpleplasty alongside another plastic surgery procedure that requires anesthesia.

Determining Depth and Location

It takes Dr. Madjidi 20 minutes to perform a dimpleplasty. The first step of the procedure involves the doctor determining the depth and placement of your new dimples and marking the location.

Creating the Dimple

A small incision is made on the inside of your cheek. Since the procedure is performed internally, no scar is visible on the outer skin. A small absorbable suture is passed through the inside of the cheek, catching onto where the dimple is desired.

Once this suture is tied, a visible dimpling on the patient's cheek is created. Even after the suture is absorbed, the scarring at the surgical site causes a permanent dimple to remain.

Simple Aftercare

Dimpleplasty is a popular procedure, in part, because of the limited downtime required following the surgery. You should be able to resume your normal activities the following day.

Dimpleplasty FAQ

When Will I Notice My New Dimple?

Patients can see the dimpling that occurs from this plastic surgery right away. The dimple will be present at first, even when the face is resting. After several days or weeks, the dimple will be present only while smiling or moving the face, just as a natural dimple would appear.

Can Anyone Have a Dimpleplasty?

Patients should ensure they are in good health to undergo the surgical process, but in terms of cheek type and size, dimple creation can be done on anyone. However, depending on the amount of fat in the cheeks and the patient's muscle anatomy, the depth of the dimple will vary.

Is a Dimpleplasty Reversible?

The great benefit of dimple creation surgery is that it can be reversible. A small reversal procedure can remove the dimples by releasing the skin.
