The Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction is a common procedure performed by Houston female plastic surgeon, Dr. Azita Madjidi. Many women suffer from having large breasts. Many are shy and self-conscious while others have skin rashes and back, shoulder, or neck pain. After surgery, these women are among the happiest and most satisfied patients. With the reduction, breasts are lifted as well. The nipples are in a more youthful position.

Your Breast Reduction Experience

Dr. Madjidi has done much research and has created the “Madjidi Breast Sizer,” a device that can precisely measure your breast volume individually. It provides an objective measurement that allows her to know how large each breast is and how much breast tissue needs to be reduced from each side to obtain the desired volume. It is very common that one breast is larger or fuller than the other. Dr. Madjidi’s device provides a precise measure of the asymmetry and guides her to obtain a better symmetry. Areola reduction is also performed for more natural-looking results.

In many cases, a breast reduction and breast lift are performed at the same time as large breasts tend to droop downward more. A breast lift will ensure the breasts have a beautiful shape and a youthful appearance. Dr. Madjidi can let you know if a breast reduction with lift is your best option.

During the consultation, Dr. Madjidi will listen to your needs, examine you, and discuss the placement of scars, the risks, post-operative care, and the follow-up. She will also encourage you to ask questions and bring up concerns.

“I personally perform the procedure and follow my patients during recovery.”

Preparing for Breast Reduction

Before performing the surgery, you will need to provide either a mammogram or a breast ultrasound report done within a year prior to your breast reduction surgery.

There are several breast reduction techniques: liposuction, periareolar, vertical scar, and inverted T scar. They all have their application based on the goal to be achieved. Dr. Madjidi will tell you which technique of breast reduction will achieve our goal during your consultation.

Breast Reduction Techniques

Breast reduction with liposuction is best for younger breasts with no stretch marks, which are moderately large and need only a cup size reduction.

Vertical scar breast reduction also works well for moderately large breasts and will create more coned shape breasts. Scar revisions are common after a few months.

Inverted T or “key hole” incisions are the most commonly performed and can be applied to most cases. It is the best for extremely large breasts. Dr. Madjidi will not extend the scar over your lateral chest area and all of the scars are hidden under the breast.

When the breasts are very large or very long, it sometimes is necessary to reposition the nipples as a graft. In that case, breastfeeding will no longer be a possibility, and nipple sensation is greatly lost and very dark colored areolas may partially lose their pigments.

Breast reduction surgery is typically done under general anesthesia and as an outpatient procedure for Dr. Madjidi’s Houston patients.

Will Insurance Cover My Breast Reduction?

We will communicate with your health insurance company to see if the cost of your surgery is covered by your policy. In some policies, breast reduction is excluded. You can call your plan to check your benefits with them. Proof of prior conservative management, such as physical therapy, pain medication, weight loss, rash treatment, and adapted bra may be needed. A mammogram is mandatory for some insurance companies for coverage, prior to surgery. We do offer financing options to help patients pay for their breast reduction.

Recovering from Breast Reduction

After the surgery, you will wear a surgical bra for a few weeks. The swelling should be gone in two to four weeks, and the final shape will be obtained at about three months. The scars will initially be firm and pink, and they normally continue to flatten and fade for up to a year.

You should be able to go back to work in a week or two based on the physical activities you do on your job.

After your breast reduction surgery, Dr. Madjidi will follow you during your healing process and see how your scars evolve. She will give you different tips and advice to improve your scars.
