What Are Silicone Breast Implants?

Silicone implants have a solid silicone shell, and they are filled with silicone gel. They are available in various sizes and profiles to meet your unique needs.

Advantages of Silicone Implants

Silicone implants have enjoyed such a surge in popularity due to their lifelike appearance and feel. Many women believe that silicone is virtually indistinguishable from natural muscle and fat.

Silicone implants are especially suitable for smaller women and those with thinner breast tissue. When naturally thin women choose silicone implants, they are less likely to experience rippling and creases over the implant site.

Finally, silicone is lighter than saline. Therefore, silicone implants are more likely to stay in a perky, uplifted position.

Disadvantages of Silicone Implants

Although research has shown that there are few, if any, health risks associated with silicone implants, this material does have a few drawbacks. The disadvantages include:

  • Longer incision: Silicone implants are pre-filled. In contrast, Dr. Madjidi can fill saline implants after placing them in your breasts. Therefore, silicone implants will require a slightly longer incision. Rest assured, however, that Dr. Madjidi will carefully hide the incisions in the natural contours of your breast.
  • Risk of silent rupture: Your body does not absorb silicone. Therefore, only an MRI can detect a ruptured silicone implant.
  • Difficulty reading mammograms: Silicone implants can obscure the results of your mammogram. However, if you let your doctor know about your implants ahead of time, he or she can take extra precautions to ensure a clear reading.
  • Risk of capsular contracture: Capsular contracture, which results when your body rejects the implant, can cause breast distortion and asymmetry. Some experts believe your risk of capsular contracture may be slightly higher if you receive silicone implants.

These risks are minimal. Of course, you should take precautions to protect your health after receiving any type of implants. However, with proper care, you should enjoy a beautiful figure with few adverse side effects.

Candidates for Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants can be a great way to achieve a more curvaceous, yet natural, figure. These implants may be especially suitable for you if:

  • You are at least 22 years of age
  • You have a naturally thin frame or a small amount of breast tissue
  • You do not mind receiving regular MRIs to check on your implants
  • You want the most natural look and feel
