Breast Implant Texture

Breast implants can have either a smooth or textured exterior. Textured breast implants are designed to resist shifting within the breast, and to reduce the risk of capsular contracture. Capsular contracture is the tightening of scar tissue surrounding the implant, resulting in a distorted breast shape and physical discomfort. However, there is considerable controversy surrounding the ability of textured implants to lower the risk of capsular contracture. Because of their controversy, Dr. Madjidi does not place textured implants. Instead, she prefers to use smooth implants that provide a more natural look and feel.

The Right Shape and Size

Breast implants are available in a wide range of sizes. They can be either round or teardrop-shaped. The size and shape of your breast implants will depend on your preferences, and will be decided after your comprehensive examination and consultation with Dr. Madjidi. Before determining the optimal implant size, a number of factors must be taken into consideration, including:

• Natural appearance—Breast implant size is often selected to achieve a bust line in proportion with your body frame. If the implant is too large, the enhancement may appear unnatural.
• LIfestyle—If you live an active lifestyle and enjoy sports, yoga, biking, or other physical activities, then you probably do not want your new breasts to get in the way. When choosing a breast implant size, consider how they may fit into your lifestyle and daily activities.
• Personal preference—Your goals and desires are the key components of a successful breast augmentation, and the shape and size of implant used is ultimately your decision.

Saline and Silicone Implants

Saline and silicone breast implants provide a variety of exclusive benefits. Saline breast implants are inserted without any fluid, and can be placed using smaller incisions. Once placed, the implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution to achieve the desired size. If ruptured, a saline implant will deflate, and the saline solution will be harmlessly absorbed by the body. By contrast, silicone breast implants are filled before placement. In the event of rupture, the silicone gel must be surgically removed before the implant is replaced. Some patients believe silicone provides a more natural shape and feel. Dr. Madjidi also offers gummy bear implants, which consist of form-stable silicone shaped like a tear drop to create natural-looking contours for the patient’s breasts. Gummy bear implants retain their shape at all times, and are becoming a popular choice among thin women, and women who undergo breast reconstruction.
