How to augment or enhance lips

Lip augmentation can be done in several ways but they do not all have the same outcome; in other words, fillers and implants do not give the lips the same shape. In my practice, I use both injectable fillers and implants for lip augmentation. It all depends on what shape lip we are dealing with and what the expectations are.

Injectable filler lip augmentation

Restylane is the only FDA approved filler for the lips. It can be used to create a nice contour around the lips or be injected into the lips for more fullness. I use Restylane-L which has a numbing medicine in it and makes it more comfortable for injection.

The implant comes in different lengths and thicknesses. I measure the lip length at the initial visit and we decide on the thickness of the implant. The upper lip is usually longer than the lower lip. We can use different thickness for upper and lower lip if we need to. The implant has the shape of the lip, thicker in the middle and tapered towards the ends. It is made of solid silicone and is very soft. The insertion is done in the office under local anesthesia. The result is immediate and permanent. It is easy to take out if we need to remove it. It gives a nice full look to the lip without projecting them too much forward.
