Am I a Candidate for Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction may be performed at the same time as a mastectomy, or it can take place at a later date. Dr. Madjidi will work closely with your physician and will only perform your reconstruction when he or she gives approval. It is also very important for you to be absolutely certain in your decision, and to pursue breast reconstruction only when you feel ready.

Preparing for Breast Reconstruction with Implants

Before your surgery, you will meet with Dr. Madjidi to determine what kind of implant to use. She will take careful note of your goals to recommend an implant that can help you achieve the results you desire. Dr. Madjidi offers both silicone and saline implants, as well as the new “gummy bear” implant, in a wide variety of sizes.

Performing Breast Reconstruction with Breast Implants

During your breast reconstruction surgery, you will be sedated with general anesthesia or IV sedation by an anesthesiologist. Dr. Madjidi will create an incision and insert an inflatable implant under your pectoral muscle. The implant will be connected to a tiny tube, which ends in a valve located outside your body. Through this valve, Dr. Madjdi will gradually fill the implant with sterile salt water. Over the next few months, as your implant slowly expands, your breast tissue will grow and expand as well. When the expandable implant has reached the full size, you will wait one to three months. Finally, Dr. Madjidi will remove the expandable implant and replace it with the implant chosen as part of your treatment plan.

Benefits and Risks

All surgeries carry some risks. The risks of breast reconstruction with implants include infection, a ruptured implant, capsular contracture, shifting implants, and asymmetry. The best way to ensure a successful surgery is to choose a reputable, proven plastic surgeon. Dr. Madjidi’s considerable knowledge and expertise can greatly minimize your chances of complications.

The primary benefits of breast reconstruction are a renewed sense of self-confidence and completeness. However, while a breast reconstruction can greatly enhance your appearance, your breast will look and feel different than it did before your mastectomy. You may have a diminished sense of touch, and there will be some visible scarring. Nevertheless, most women find that the benefits of breast reconstruction far outweigh these downsides.
